Through depression, illness and a heck of a birthday party, video games have been our family's glue Dominik Diamond

The Guardian

There are now new, different rooms to fill with all the things and machines that keep a family functioning. Some of them, as ever, are games consoles. I wrote recently about the place that the ZX Spectrum occupied in our council house in Arbroath in the 80s. But we had a machine before that. A bizarre arcade box that came with a black and white TV and an assortment of Pong knockoffs.

The best Nintendo Switch games for 2022

Engadget

Just five years ago, Nintendo was at a crossroads. The Wii U was languishing well in third place in the console wars and, after considerable pressure, the company was making its first tentative steps into mobile gaming with Miitomo and Super Mario Run. Fast-forward to today: The Switch is likely on the way to becoming the company's best-selling "home console" ever, and seven Switch games have outsold the Wii U console. However, the Switch's online store isn't the easiest to navigate, so this guide aims to help the uninitiated start their journey on the right foot. These are the games you should own -- for now.

'Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl' is a Smash Bros. clone that completely misses the point

Washington Post - Technology News

But a big part of the charm of Smash Bros. is the nostalgia it evokes in its players. "Smash Bros. Ultimate," in particular, is a celebration of video games themselves. From the stages to the retained 8-bit music, to the Spirits characters -- which are literally just PNGs ripped straight from their original games-- all of it harkens back to the games Smash Bros. draws its fighting roster from.

Is Kirby the best Super Smash Bros character? USA TODAY staff sounds off

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Nintendo recently hosted Nintendo Direct live stream during the Electronic Entertainment Expo, revealing several video games coming to the company's popular video game console. Among the announcements, the company revealed the character Kazuya of "Tekken" fame is the latest brawler to step into battle as a new character in the fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, Nintendo didn't specify when Kazuya would make its Smash Bros. debut. In honor of the announcement, we asked USA TODAY staffers to give us their favorite Smash Bros. character main. He's from my favorite Legend of Zelda franchise game: "Ocarina of Time," and made his Smash debut in Super Smash Brothers Melee.

Nintendo announces Minecraft character Steve will make his way to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Nintendo announced the character Steve from the popular video game Minecraft will be the newest fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the firm's Switch console. The company shared a short presentation Thursday morning that teased Steve playing a new Minecraft-themed stage and battling Mario in the first few minutes. The game suggests Steve will have similar abilities used in Minecraft like creating swords and blocks, bringing the two worlds together. Nintendo also shared that users will have the ability to choose other characters from the Mojang Studios game including Alex, Zombie and Enderman – all which will have the same abilities as Steve. The reveal sparked a tweet frenzy on Twitter seconds after the 10:30am ET announcement – 'Minecraft' has hundreds of thousands of tweets and is still trending on the social media platform.

If you like Smash, you'll love 'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate'

Engadget

It was inevitable that a new Nintendo console would spawn another installment in the storied Super Smash Bros. series. And now we're just weeks away from the return of the fun and frantic fighter that's been responsible for countless smiles, frayed friendships and broken controllers. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has far more characters and stages than any of the preceding releases, but the general gameplay formula has merely been tweaked and tuned. That's exactly what we all want, of course, and as a side-effect it gave Nintendo the time to focus on single-player aspects much more than it's done before. Last week I headed to Nintendo's UK base to hear a bit more about the game and experience the single-player firsthand. Where Smash Bros. has been undeniably one-dimensional in the past, Nintendo wants this one to be a bit more accessible.

Nintendo's 'Mario Tennis Aces' combines charm with surprising depth

Engadget

Before Mario Tennis Aces appears in stores and on your Switch, Nintendo offered up a weekend of tournament play to whet appetites and convince you to preorder its first in-house sport title for the Switch. The demo sticks to purely tournament play, and while we didn't get the chance to play one another, there's something addictive here. That is, once you've figured out what the heck's going on. Two editors offer their very early impressions. When I first saw the trailer for Mario Tennis Aces, I thought it looked like the perfect kind of game to throw on the TV when a bunch of friends visit.

The 8 Ways Nintendo Can Double Down on Switch's Success

Once again, Nintendo has done the impossible. Going into 2018, the Nintendo Switch is on track to sell 20 million units in its first year. That means it has already outsold Nintendo's 4-year-old Wii U and is the fastest-selling U.S. console ever, taking the honors from Nintendo's Wii console a decade ago. With Switch, Nintendo is back on its game and eyeing a return to its glory days. In the last 20 years, Nintendo has fallen on its face as often as it's succeeded.
